While many organizations like to promote the idea that they support “self management” most don’t really commit.

In a complex, decentralized, system we cannot know the results of actions before we act. We must move first, sense how the system changes, update our response and then try again. This requires a fundamentally different mind/skill set to what we have been taught.

We have never been equipped with the mindset to operate within decentralised environments. We’ve been taught to manage complexity with hierarchy, to focus on a tiny piece of the big picture — to pretend that there was a single correct answer. It’s time to see the whole system.

The Triumph of Death — Pieter Bruegel

In a complex system, we can never “know” an answer. Whatever happens we will make decisions based on “belief”. Believing that responses to the pandemic are “following the science” can only create division. Only by accepting this reality can we move forward.

Human society is inseparable from its tools. Change one and you change the other. As our technology becomes ever more powerful, we can no longer safely develop any tools without considering the systemic way in which they will impact society.

Unlike school, life does not really give us many opportunities to know the correct answer. There is only the answer we choose, not because we have enough information, but because we made a choice.

The Tarot is a systemic map of perspectives, if we apply it within an organization, it can provide a foundation for ethical action.
