This is a quick one. To be honest, I read this book more than a decade ago, so I can’t really tell you if it’s good to read, or even has an interesting story. The underlying premise of the story however has never been far from my mind.
Communities need grit. When time are easy, there is no real need for us to come together — we can just look after ourselves. The luxury of rampant consumerism we have experienced in the west for the last two decades has eroded human bonds everywhere. Cocaine Nights explores what holds communities together.
If you are interested in creating communities that last, and have not spent much time reflecting on the importance of conflict and pain, on the need for grit to create the pearl — then this is worth a read.
